History and meaning of salt
Halite , known to miners as rock salt , takes its name from the Greek words "hals" and "lithos", meaning "salt" and "stone", respectively . Ernst Friedrich Glocker gave it this name in 1847, initially in the form "halites", but the "s" was later deleted by James Dwight Dana, giving halite its final name.
Halite deposits result from the evaporation of salty seas or lakes during the Triassic and Oligocene geological periods, dating back several million years. In France, for example, these deposits formed in the Triassic, around 250 to 200 million years ago, developing in layers up to 30 km thick. The first mining of halite by humans dates back to the Neolithic era.

In its pure state, halite is usually white or transparent. However, the presence of impurities such as magnesium chloride or calcium chloride can alter its color, making it appear gray, ocher, black, brown, purple or even blue.
This stone is recognizable by its salty taste , its cubic shape and its ability to dissolve in water. It is also characterized by its great stability and its moist texture to the touch. However, its low hardness, rated at 2.5 on the Mohs scale, makes it brittle.
